9. ANNA WALENTYNOWICZ – legendary Solidarity activist

This lecture was given by Dr Marek Laskiewicz at 7.30pm on Thursday 28th July in Sala Seledynowa, POSK, 23-46 King Street, London W6 0RF.

Mrs Anna Walentynowicz was one of the legendary founders of the original Solidarity, here termed Solidarity I, which of course subsequently went on to become the world-renown nationwide protest against communism. It was her sacking from the Gdansk Lenin Shipyard that was the direct overt cause of the famous strike which started on the 14th of August 1980, and her re-instatement was one of the strikers’ 21 demands, including free trade unions, to which the communist government finally agreed at the end of August.

Born Anna Lubczyk in humble circumstances in Rowne in Eastern Poland she never held high office, initially because she was a worker with little education and later out of choice since she would not abandon her principles of honesty and patriotism. There was absolutely nothing in her early life to indicate that she would one day become a symbol of Poland’s struggle against communism. Indeed she worked diligently for years in the Gdansk Shipyard, was married with a son, and lived in a small one bedroom flat. In short she was a Mrs Poland, hard-working, patriotic, religious but unknown like millions of others.

Nevertheless there were two factors which did play a key role in her rise to fame. She was very patriotic, so took part in the various uprisings and strikes that punctuated Polish communist history, though many others did the same, suffering threats, arrest and the like; she worked in an important industrial concern, named after Lenin himself, and perchance this was selected by the communists for their own ends to stage a token strike so suddenly this became the key concern in Poland. However simultaneously a small group of Poles, notably Lech Walesa, Andrzej Gwiazda, Krzysztof Wyszkowski and her, were also planning a real strike to help free Poland. The two plans coalesced to produce that famous strike, after which she entered into history.

On the 13th of Decmeber 1981 Solidarity I was crushed by the communists led by Jaruzelski. She herself was arrested and interned, but eventually released when the communists tried to normalise the situation. All through the 1980s she struggled on like so many others, trying to survive yet also trying to rebuild Poland’s freedom.

Nonetheless she was well aware of the many pitfalls of agents and collaborators, and indeed had already started to suspect Lech Walesa since he had been part of the plot that saw her thrown out of Solidarity I’s leadership committee. So when Lech Walesa proposed in 1988 that she join his new Solidarity, here termed Solidarity II, she at once saw that something was wrong and refused, as did all the patriotic key members of Solidarity I like Andrzej Gwiazda – and she later refused a government post in Walesa’s regime.

Subsequently she campaigned tirelessly, risking her life, against the set-up in 1989 when the communists retained power in Poland whilst overtly abandoning their ideology. She publicly accused Lech Walesa of being a collaborator in 1995, and tried again and again uncompromisingly to fight for real change in Poland.

Finally she had the pleasure of being publicly acclaimed as a symbol of fighting Poland in the Polish Parliament when Lech Kaczynski was President of Poland. On the 10th of April 2010 at Smolensk she died with him and his wife along with many other leading Polish patriots when they were group murdered by Russia with the help of the current collaborationist Polish regime.

It is perhaps fitting to note that her contribution has not finished even now. Not only is her history of interest in itself, being a microcosm of Poland’s history, but she and her colleagues also greatly contributed to the lecturer’s understanding of how communist Poland functioned. Moreover, though this will only be brought out at a later date, she is fascinating because she is a superb example of an important unrecognised phenomenon, namely she was of the Left but not a communist. As such, to her enemies’ horror, she will live on.

Ażeby to zwalczyć, trzeba skoordynować wysiłki.

W Sali Seledynowej, POSK 238-246 King Street London W6 0RF                              O 17.00 w sobotę 17 kwietnia 2010.  Wstęp Wolny

2. O TUTEJSZEJ POLSZCZYŹNIE I SPOLECZEŃSTWACH

W Sali Seledynowej, POSK, 238-246 King Street, London W6 0RF, o 17.00, sobota 27 marca 2010. Wstęp wolny.

1. ROSJA: NASTĘPNY KRYZYS.

Wykladowca: Dr Marek Laskiewicz.

Rosja wolniutko rozszerza swoje wpływy. Wkrótce Polska to będzie odczuwała, raczej cierpiała.

W Sali Seledynowej, POSK, 238-246 King Street, London W6 0RF, o 17.30 28 lutego 2010. Wstęp wolny.
